Double-decker buses were first introduced to Hong Kong in 1949, and since then they play an important role in the public transport network in the city. Daily jounerys on public transport in the city are accounted for 90%, making it the highest in the world.
By 2008, approximately 630 bus routes and 6,000 buses are operated by five franchised bus companies in the city, and the bus network covers nearly the whole of Hong Kong. Most franchised buses are double-decker, which helps to reduce road congestion and carbon emissions. All buses are equipped with the Octopus smart card payment system.
