Great Wall of China 萬里長城
The Great Wall of China was built and rebuilt between the 5th Century BC and the 16th Century mainly to protect the Chinese Empire from the Mongolians and other invaders. The Great Wall of China stretches over 4,160 miles or 6,700 km westward from the eastern seaside town of Shanhaiguan to Gansu Province.
Around two to three million workers died during the centuries-long project.
According to NASA, it is the only manmade object that is barely visible to astronauts from low earth orbit under good conditions. The Great Wall was inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Badaling, northwest of urban Beijing in Yanqing County, is the section we chose to experience the Great Wall. Some stairs are surprisingly steep as you can see in the photos; it is tougher than it looks! Temperature is a little below of the city's average but it can be windy. The Great Wall is indeed one of the world's greatest man-made and natural wonders. Try to avoid peak seasons, though.
