The Palace of Westminster, or the House of Parliament, is a royal palace for major public ceremonial events. The original palace was built in the middle of the 11th century and was the residence of English Monarch until 1547 when it became the permanent site for Parliament. In 1834, the entire palace was virtually destroyed by fire and rebuilding took from 1836-1860. The present palace and the nearby Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church were inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
