The oldest fortress in the country, it has been a royal palace, a place for assemblies and treaties, execution, a prison and even a zoo. At the centre stands the White Tower built by William the Conqueror, the King of England from 1066 to his death, in 1078 with its Norman chapel. The surrounding 13th Century Roman City walls was built to protect the Normans from outside invaders. The complex is now a famous tourist attraction and one of the four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Greater London.
