Shatin District has the highest population in all of 18 districts and covers the areas of Shatin, Tai Wai, Fo Tan, Ma On Shan and Ma Liu Shui. Shatin is Hong Kong's first satellite town and has the first tunnel in the city - the Lion Rock Tunnel completed in 1967. It is part of New Territories and mainly a residential area with the Fo Tan suburb being the industrial zone, although many have moved to China.
Shatin is famous for its racecourse, museums, shopping centres, and traditional temples and villages with a history of over 500 years. On August 08, the Shatin Racecourse was hosting the equestrian events during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
