The district is renowned for its rich cultural heritage represented by monuments and antiquities, and traditional ceremonies are still practiced. Public transport services within the district are primarily provided by MTR Light Rail.
The New Towns of Yuen Long include Yuen Long New Town plus Tin Shui Wai New Town, Hong Kong's largest new town located in the northwestern part of the district. It was originally a fishponds area, and the whole town did not exist until the reclamation began in 1987.
